You Will Receive: A 6-Week Narrative Curriculum for Pre-Clinical Students

A six‐week, humanities‐driven curriculum designed to immerse pre‐clinical students in the intersection of narrative and anatomy, “Reading the Body” uses stories, reflective writing, and facilitated discussion to transform how future clinicians perceive patients—and themselves—in the lab and beyond. Each week, participants will:

Week 1 – Embodied Stories of Flesh and Bone: Explore foundational texts that treat the human body as a narrative archive. Students will read first‐person accounts from cadaver donors, dissecting how identity, memory, and meaning reside in physical form.
Week 2 – The Anatomy Lab as Story Space: Through guided reflection prompts and small‐group dialogue, learners connect the tactile experience of dissection with patients’ personal histories. This session frames each anatomical structure not merely as a technical entity, but as a vessel of lived experience.
Week 3 – Empathy Exercises & Reflective Writing: Building on narrative theory, students practice writing exercises that translate cadaver observations into compassionate language. By crafting brief patient vignettes informed by anatomical findings, they sharpen their ability to see the “body as text” and develop empathetic listening skills.
Week 4 – Guest Lecturer: Narrative Ethics in Medicine: A seasoned clinician‐writer or bioethicist will lead a virtual lecture on how storytelling shapes ethical care—addressing topics such as consent, dignity of the body, and the moral responsibilities of pre‐clinical learners.
Week 5 – Mapping Identity Through Dissection: Learners collaborate in small teams to create “anatomy maps” that visually and narratively link organ systems to aspects of personhood (e.g., “The Heart of Memory,” “Liver as Emotional Filter”). These maps become the basis for peer‐led presentations that highlight the interplay between physiology and psychology.
Week 6 – Integrating Narrative into Clinical Practice: In the final session, students co‐author a collective “Body as Text” anthology—short, anonymized stories that weave anatomical insight with patient care scenarios. Faculty facilitate a closing discussion on how these narratives can inform future clinical encounters, charting a path toward more humane, patient‐centered practice.

I’m Ssanyu Birigwa, M.S., in Narrative Medicine Columbia University, lecturer and steward of Narrative Medicine’s evolving cultural landscape Columbia University Medical School.

As the founder of the Pause3™ Method—a new integrative ethnology that supports an individual’s narrative health from the inside out—I draw on my work in co-developing Narrative Medicine’s cultural IP to teach others how stories shape healing. Through my contributions to curriculum design, case-study development, and the codification of Narrative Medicine principles, I’ve helped create the frameworks and teaching materials that are now used by medical schools and interdisciplinary programs nationwide.

Grounded in the belief that each of us holds the power to self-heal and that true wellness is multidimensional, the Pause3™ framework offers a practical entry point for cultivating a potent healing baseline. In every lecture, workshop, or one-on-one session, I guide learners to trace their own narrative arcs—exploring moments of gratitude, intention, and forgiveness—and to apply these insights toward stronger resilience, deeper empathy, and more authentic connection. If you’re shopping for a California wine drinker, con- sider checking out the “backroads” regions in the state, like Clements Hills, Cienega Valley, Red Hills Lake County, and Ballard Canyon. Old heritage vines and thoughtful winemaking in these locales have resulted in wines of place with depth and character for a fraction of the price of the better-known regions.
